dude, i signed up fer collidge!!! i are speshal.

i registered for some classes.
my schedule is something like:

monday:
journalism 120 (mr. francis at rio hondo)
tuesday/thursday:
amst-300 or intro to american pop culture
afro-320 or black political thought
comm-233 or mass communications in modern society
wednesday:
journalism-120 at rio hondo again
comm-300 or visual communication

i'm a little discouraged that i was only able to gain entrance to two classes from my major at csu FULLerton, and that i have to take journalism 120 at rio hondo, but it is a major prerequisite that will open doors to other classes that i was unable to sign up for this semester.

i watched a really good documentary called "why we fight," which centers around eisenhower's ominous farewell address to the american people about what he coined as the military industrial complex. i'm really wondering why we are killing people in iraq. actually, i'm more disturbed by the american public's support of a pro-life president so willing to discard so many civilian lives for such a worldly cause. it is not the true will of god, of that i am certain.

  1. Congrats student Rob. Go college.

You know I wonder everyday why this nation is so willing to sacrifice so many young men and women for situations the general populace has little to no critical understanding. As a nation that prides itself on its ahistorical mindset and narcissism we appear to have learned nothing about other cultures and societies. We remain the ugly american, bigoted and self-important. No wonder simplistic and inane commercials dominate out air ways and shock jocks or political baffoons can make millions. As a nation we appear to abhor the complex and embrace the easily digestible. I don't get it. I feel so sad for those I knew who died in Vietnam. What a waste. A now were are wasting more lives for something that was manufactured from lies and played on the fears of the populace. Shame on the leaders who didn't question, shame on those that manufactured those lies to suit their greedy purposes. Shame on all those who still believe the lies and imagine a simplistic end to a complex world event.

  2. I guess that is how the whole college thing goes these days. Some of those classes sound interesting; and, I am looking forward to hearing abou them.

Do you own that documentary? I'd like to see it as I have heard about it recently. I was surprised that it was a president who had been a famous general who coined the phrase "military industrial complex" to negatively describe the economic structures that contribute to war.

While there is consideral bufoonery out there, I also know there is a more reasonable point-of-view in places like sojourners.org, calltorenewal.org, http://www.mcc.org/, http://www.thirdway.com/wv/, and others.

  3. My friends at CSUF have complained of difficulty getting their major classes. They say they fill too quickly. Too many students for too few seats. Is that what happened to you.

The classes sound interesting to me. I want to hear what the texts will be and what you learn.

If you let Glen access that documentary, I'll watch it, too. I've heard about Eisenhower and that label you mention. I'd like to know more. It is a troubling topic and I admire you for bringing it up on our blog. It will be interesting to see what dialog transpires. Gram lived during WWII. Most of the others lived during Vietnam, Desert Storm, and now this. Different perspectives, I'm sure. I need to think and evaluate some more before I respond further.
