occasionally, i wake up in a funk. for reasons not immediately, nor sometimes even eventually apparent, i simply do not feel well. one of my favorite emotionally cathartic activities when i awake in this mode, is browsing for music at various record stores. i do not always purchase music, but often i put up a weak defense against the urge to bring home new compact discs. this week's anodyne has been provided by Del the Funkee Homosapien, "Digable Planets" and the late sixties band, "love." good stuff.
i picked up a course catalog for rio hondo for next semester. i'd like to give school another shot, and see if something, anything gets me fired up again. slingin' pie is not the vocation to which most children, or ambitious individuals would aspire.
did anyone see kobe score 50 the other day? he was on fire!
recommended: "munich."
Yes, I hope you fully understood the irony of my use of the word: "exciting."
ReplyDeleteI am interested in hearing more of what you thought of Mr. Spielberg's work. Will this be just another film to make me cry? How justified are the outcries of those calling out about revisionism?
We saw Good Night and Good Luck. An interesting film with historical context and the use of actual footage from the antagonist character. I thought the film was well done, thoughtful and with relevance to today's situation.
two more movies to add to my list. wanted to see both. right now need to build up the reserve to see either. sad feeling color my view of the current war and politics. like to hear both of your thoughts about these movies.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna pass on Munich. I couldn't even handle the music from Schindler's List. Cried a lot in Amistad. Skipped Private Ryan. Rugged topics wipe me out. Mr. Spielberg hits them head on in brilliant fashion, it seems. That's not the negative part. That can be good for me. It's the visual images that stay with me way too long and hit me too hard. The curse of a photographic memory or whatever.
ReplyDeleteI did like Good Night and Good Luck. Loved the black and white film, the story, the secretive couple, the political climate and conflict, and pithy comments from Murrow. Wanted to have longer to mull over some of the comments. A good blend of intelligence and entertainment. By the end of the movie, it almost seemed like my clothes smelled like smoke (lots of cigarettes consumed by characters in the movie)
munich has a central theme that (perhaps too heavy-handedly) tells of the futility of vengeance, and the cycle of violence that perpetuates when groups of people (or perhaps even individuals, depending upon how deeply you allow this theme to penetrate your paradigm) act upon their human desire to avenge wrongs committed against them with brutal violence. the best part about it to me, is that spielberg himself has come under fire from both sides of the palestine/isreal conflict, possibly because there is no side of the conflict portrayed with any more sympathy than the other. as this special task force created by the isrealis makes it's way around europe, tracking down and killing the palestinians responsible for planning the massacre in munich, the palestinians continue to replace these individuals with equally motivated individuals, eager to carry out revenge the way their predecessors did. murder begets murder, etc. perhaps it's bleak, and the film had me emotionally stirred, but it seems objective, with perhaps only peace in mind.
ReplyDeletei wanted to see good night, and good luck as well. (i was in anaheim when you called glen, otherwise i would have eagerly accepted your invitation to go with you guys to see it.)
Next movie I want to see is Tommy Lee Jones directorial debut, The Three Burials of Malchiades Estrada. I think we;ll have to go to Pasadena or someplace to see it. Anyone?
ReplyDeleteI was wishing I had seen U2 in the most recent tour. Anyone want to go to Mexico City or Monterrey??
i'll go check that one out with ye. but cindi has to go too, and sit between us, because i hear it has a shared theme with brokeback mountain.
ReplyDeleteI had not heard anything about that :theme: in that movie.
