Tour of California

I spent several hours volunteering as a Course Marshall for the Tour of California. Stage one ended in Santa Rosa. Riders entered the city from the west and rode in a circuit through the downtown. After riding three times on the circuit they finished in the middle of the city. I was able to work on the course into town and then on the last corner before the finish line. The people were friendly and excited to see the riders. Many of the spectators were families. The small children clapped and waved as the riders passed. It was a lot of fun and I know Glen and Cindi will have a great time at the last stage.

  1. Very excited to see this photo, hear the report, and anticipate our big debut as marshals on Sunday. Steve, it is very cool that you jumped in on the ground floor year of this event, too. I hope it is the first of many years for the race. It is fun to watch on TV...ESPN2 11:00pm Monday and 10:00pm the rest of the week. Same announcers (2 of them anyway) as Tour de France. Glad you had fun. The riders will go by us 7 times on the circuit Sunday. Blink. Blink. And it looks like we will be on a street across from the ocean. I imagine there will be real estate blocking the view. Proud of you! Love the shirt.

  2. I am worrying about the most minor things. Did they give you a whistle? I want to be sure to have a whistle!

Did you take any photos of the racers? While racing or after?

  3. They did give us whistles that had a pitch for dogs. Gave it to one of the little girls to bribe her to stay out of the road. I left my camera at home so picked up one of those single use digital cameras. Will post a shot if any turn out. They did keep us busy, but when the riders come by there is plenty of time to take pictures during the race. They go by fast so you get a couple at a time. The other marshalls were fun to talk to and being a biker you will have plenty to talk about.
